As promised, here is the post on Nicodemus NHS. There is not a ton to see, but the place is rich in history. Totally worth visiting!
From the NPS website: “Formerly enslaved African Americans left Kentucky in organized colonies at the end of the of post-Civil War Reconstruction period to experience freedom in the “promised land” of Kansas. Nicodemus represents the involvement of African Americans in the westward expansion and settlement of the Great Plains. It is the oldest and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River.”
The town counts fewer than 20 people, but the ranger told me that about 800 people come back in the summer to celebrate the town and the families that live(d) there.
