Yellowstone: Cervus canadensis

In plain English, we had the pleasure to see some elk up close.

We saw a few cows (female elk) with them their calves (baby elk). They were grazing by the road and then decided to cross the river (probably for more privacy as people started gathering to take photographs). The elk of Yellowstone are the most abundant large mammal in the park. It is my understanding that their behavior is being studied as one of the cows had a tracking collar.
