Salton Sea mud pots…

… because it’s California and sometimes you are by the ocean, sometimes you are by the mountains, sometimes you are in the desert… and sometimes you hang out at a Mars-like  place.

I took these photos back in December when I went to the Salton Sea/Joshua Tree National Park. The Salton Sea is one of the most bizarre places I’ve been to. And I’ve been to a lot of places…

Some people seemed to think that they’d be all dried up when we arrived, but the mud pots were alive and well. Maybe not as spectacular as they can sometimes be, but still a great place to discover. It’s just another world. Kind of surreal if you ask me. I’ve seen similar stuff in Lassen Volcanic National Park, but the Salton Sea adds a different dimension to things. It’s hot; it’s windy; it has a particular smell. For those who’d like to go, the mud pots and geothermal mud volcanoes are located in Calipatria, CA.
