Let me tell you. It’s quite the sight when you finally find Salvation Mountain.
There is almost nothing around and most of the people live off the grid. The nearby town, Slab City, Imperial County, is nothing but trailer park homes and makeshift furniture and art. It’s definitely interesting, especially when you know that this is in Southern California near the Salton Sea -not too far from Los Angeles (relatively speaking).
Salvation Mountain was created by Leonard Knight (1931-2014) and is made out of adobe, straw and lead-free paint. Since his passing in 2014, the site has been in danger of disappearing. It requires lots of maintenance. A charity was founded in 2012 to protect and maintain the site as Leonard Knight was placed in a care facility.
