Point Bonita Lighthouse – a Golden Gate gem

As everyone knows, it’s Winter break, so it’s time to keep the kiddos busy. Living in San Francisco, there a tons of options, but I always feel like we end up doing the same thing. So, on Friday, we went to the Marin Headlands and tried to visit something new to us -the Point Bonita Lighthouse… (but keep on reading…)

…Except it’s only open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. So we had to do it again on Monday to finally experience it.

It’s truly great. Really. You first go down a trail that takes you to a big metal door (which was locked on Friday). Then, you go through a tunnel through the mountain. Once on the other side, you can start seeing the lighthouse. But you are not quite there yet. You still have to go across a bridge that moves quite a bit…but it’s brand new so no worries!

They just rebuilt the bridge (completed in 2012) so visitors could have access to the lighthouse. Prior to that, it was only accessible to coast guards. Pretty neat!

Comments? They are much appreciated! ;)
